The Canterbury Tales

  • The Ice Factory 10 Somerset Place Teignmouth, England, TQ14 4AF United Kingdom (map)

The Canterbury Tales is a devised piece inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s most famous work.

The Canterbury Tales follows a group of pilgrims on their way to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Thomas a Beckett. To entertain themselves along the way, they decide to hold a story-telling competition.

The stories reflect a wide-ranging cross-section of society, from lofty tales of courtly love to animal fables and bedroom farce. Many tales fall short of the spiritual goals of the pilgrimage itself, but what makes for the 'best' story?

This playful take on Chaucer's most famous work has been devised without a script by members of the Teignmouth Players with the aim of keeping the entertainment value of these old stories at the heart of our production.

Although medieval sensibilities can sometimes be strikingly familiar, they are also often starkly divergent. This production leans into both aspects, highlighting the similarities and differences between medieval and modern attitudes to love, sex, morality and marriage.
